Yang Hae-gue, a Berlin-based artist, will represent Korea at the Venice Biennale in 2009. In an interview with the Chosun Ilbo on Tuesday, Yang (37) said the key to her success as a foreigner in the European art world was that she makes full use of the solitude and isolation she feels as a foreigner in her art.
graduated from the College of Arts at Seoul National University, and was a "master pupil" at the Stadelschule in Frankfurt. Critics say Yang pursues an "emotional conceptualism."

To Yang, art is a tool that makes spectators sympathize and "resonate" with intimate memories and ideas that captured the heart of the artist. "The essence of my work lies in appealing to all senses by any reasonable means such as light, sound, temperature and wind, and eventually draw emotional consensus between the artist and the spectators," she says. "One thing an artist and a philosopher have in common is that they both create a tool that leads people to see things that exist more clearly."

Yang was recently named as one of the 100 top media installation artists by German economic magazine Capital.
